Hugo von Hofmannsthal was a German poet, playwright and dramatist. His works include the play Der Rosenkavalier, the libretto for Richard Strauss's opera of the same name, and his own Emmy-winning adaptation of Goethe's Faust, which premiered in Vienna in 1909. Hofmannsthal was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts from 1877 to 1902. He studied literature and philosophy in Munich and Berlin
